Founded 1957 as Guangzhou Academy of Music. Renamed the Guangzhou Music Institute 1958. Merged with the Guangdong Dance School to become the Guangdong College of Art 1965. Merged with the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts for the Guangdong People 1969. Transformed into Guangzhou Music Institute 1978. Upgraded into the Guangzhou Academy of Music 1981. Acquired present title 1985.
